Quilt design wall

Ca y est, je l'ai !!
Yeah, I have it!!

A quilt design board: this is my dream since we came back to land!

When we were living onboard, the sailboat (where we lived for 18 years) was not big enough to install a design board! Of course: no walls, limited space...
So now, as we are living in a regular home at land since 4 years, I look at the walls with an idea in mind...

Au bateau : pas de mur ! / Onboard: no walls!

Here is my sewing studio, and oh! great! an empty wall! ;))

Avant / Before

TUTORIAL : DIY your own quilt design wall

I bought three insulation boards, 125 x 60 x 2 cm (49" x 23.5" x 3/4"), extruded polystyrene.

Tape together the three boards with some Duct Tape, or packaging tape.
I like the transparent one.

As I'm rented, I avoid making too many holes in walls. My solution: thumb tacks!
So I bought twelve board ties and taped them along the top face which will be against the wall.

You can spray some of the fabric adhesive onto the batting, it keep it smooth. Lay the boards on top of the batting.

Turn the edges of the batting to the wrong side of the boards, maintaining it tightened. I taped the batting every 5 cm (2"), then taped the edges of the batting down with packaging tape.
To be sure that the batting holds well, and as I don't own a gun stapler, I pushed small pins across batting and boards, every 5 cm (I was careful they were not crossing the panel!).

At the top of the board, make a hole for letting the ties going outside, then with help (it's not easy to handle this board by yourself!), pin on the wall with thumb tacks.

Et voilà !!

Après ! / After

Et vous, en avez-vous un ?
And what about you, do you own a quilt design wall?

  1. The design wall looks great. Thanks for the tutorial. I currently have one of those thin fabric "walls" but, when we move in a year, hope to make a more solid version.

  2. I don't have a bare wall big enough, and bought 2 foam boards that were damaged, cut off the rough wriggly edge, and made a "pillowcase" cover with white flannel on the design side, and cotton sheeting on the other, Sewed the top shut, and can carry them to where I want to put the quilt blocks. Hopefully in our next home, will have a permanent place.
